ST. JOHN AMBULANCE

ACTIVITIES REVIEWED EXCELLENT RESULTS OBTAINED

AViien presenting certificates earned recently l the president of the AVhakatane St. John Ambulance Association, Mr A. J. Canning, on Tuesday night brielly reviewed, the! activities of the Association since? its inception in this town in 1935.» He stated that since the formation of the Association 106 members had obtained passes in First Aid.

Commencing classes in October, 1985, members took their first examination in June of 1936 when five passed. Comparing recent figures Mr Canning slated that in 1939, 36 entrants qualified in examinations, while this year the number had increased to 48, 30 passing First Aid, five obtaining vouchers, eleven Medallions and two Labels, while one member under 16 years also qualified.

War Work. Mr Canning continued to state that the Women's War Service Auxiliary* had expressed a desire to co-operate with the Association and asked that St. John members give lectures on First Aid work. The members of the Auxiliary, however, did not wish to sit for examinations. The districts requiring lectures were to in-» elude all centres within' the Auxiliary's area, The president stated that the Association would very much like to give the assistance asked for, but pointed out that to do so would be very difficult as the Association had only three members capable of undertaking that class of work and it woukl be a big task for them to visit all the centres in the area. The shortage of petrol would also be a factor Avhicli would make the task. awkward.

However, Mr Canning suggested that some help might be afforded, but it would be necessary for the meetings to be held.riot at all towns, but at centres of several districts. He added th.it the secretary of the Association had written to the Auckland centre seeking advice in connection with the request.
