GENEROUS OFFER
CONVALESCENT SOLDIERS SUGGESTED PROVISION" The need for the provision of some means of convalescing soldiers was the subject of a letter received by the Whakatane County Council yesterday, and the suggestion was accompanied with the offer of a generous donation towards the costs which might be involved. The letter stated that it was recognised that this district had subscribed very liberally towards patriotic efforts in Hie general way, hut that the scheme proposed appeared to be one of a definite nature which the public would be only too pleased to support. Continuing, the communication stated that a fcAv years ago there was a scheme to develop the Pukaaha Reserve, but that only a small amount of expenditure was incurred owing to the lack of funds.
The writer was of the opinion that the reserve appeared to be a very suitable retreat for soldiers to convalesce if it could be developed on the lines of the thermal springs at Matamata. "If this scheme meets' with the approval of, the council and the people of the district, the writer and his wife would bo glad to subscribe it an amount of £100," concluded the letter.
The generous offer was greatly appreciated by members of the council and it was decided that the writer be thanked for his gesture, while it was decided that the Works Committee make investigations and report to the next meeting.
