BOOKMAKING CHARGE

FINE OF £25 IMPOSED At the Opotiki Courthouse on Monday before Messrs C. Pipe and J. Currie, J.P's. an Opotiki resident, was charged that on February 24, at Opotiki, he carried on the business of a bookmaker. Accused, who was arrested by Copstable W. A. Rathie, elected to be dealt with summarily. A plea of guilty was entered Constable Rathie stated that a quantity of betting material was found on the premises of accused. Accused had never been convicted of any offence before and had a very good character. In view of the fact that accused gave an assurance that he would not carry on the business-in future, lie was convicted and fined £25.— News.
