INTOXICATED MOTORIST
FINE OF £5 At the Opotiki Courthouse on Monday before Messrs W. T". Burrett and G. Pipe, J.P's, a Maori, Joseph Riley Grace was charged with being found drunk in charge of a motor -car in Church Streot on Saturday. Accused, who works on contracts at Matawai, is a married man with four children. A plea of guilty was ■entered. Constable W. A. Rat hie, who conducted proceedings on behalf of the police said that at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Constable W. R. Cooper ?aw accused, near a hotel and advised him to go home. About half an hour later Constable Rathie and Cooper were near Mr Croll's shop where they saw accused in a car afid a boy starting it. Accused drove off, being considerably under the influence of liquor. He was arresetd and medically examined. Accused offered to take out a prohibition order against himself. The bench said that it would be '■in accused's own interests to do that. 4 In view of this promise and also the fact that he had a family to support, accused would be convicted and fined his license cancelled for 12 months.
