GAOL FOR MAORIS
UNLAWFULLY ON PREMISES thre^^JßlPcharged At the local Court on Friday, before Messrs W. Sullivan and G. P.. -Kent, J's.P., three natives appeared on charges of being unlawfully on the premises of the Whakatane Hotel. They were Spadie Merito, Ru'sben Taylor and Karauria Kingi. Sergeant M. Farrell stated that the :men had on Wednesday night molested women employees of the Whakatane Hotel having visited the staff -quarters. The young women had become alarmed and notified the proprietor, Mr Hayter, who had sent the offenders away. However, they had, returned at -about midnight and one had entered a girl's room on the pretext that he was looking for another room. He had been reluctant lo leave, and on being called the second time Mr Hayter had notified the police. The men had been apprehended on the following day.
The Bench agreed with the Sergeant that the offence was a serious one and in view of Kingi's bad record sentenced him to 21 day's gaol, while his comj>anions were given 1-J ■ days.
