OATH OF ALLEGIANCE
Siry—l shall be glad if you can find space in your valuable column's to reprint an extract from the last "Rationalist" regarding attestation 1 for military service. A slight misunderstanding in connection with attestation on enlistment by myself in the Home Guard indicates that a more general understanding of the position is desir- : able. Yours etc., ANDREW McLEAN.
(The extract referred to reads: As a result of recent enquiries made by the Association (Rationalist) from, the Minister :>f Defence the following information has been received— (1) Provision exists in , the regulations for Rationalists, or other nonreligionists to make an affirmation in place of the oath. This means that any reference to God may be omitted from the oath of allegiance. (2) There is also provision on the form of enlistment for a Rationalist or other non-religionist declare himself. Thus the the question "What is your religious denomination?" could be Rationalist, Freethinker, etc. An assurance was received from the Minister that nonrcligionists in the forces would not be penalised in any way for their beliefs. Ed.)
