EXPORT OF PORK

SHIPPING PROBLEM When asked to comment on recent Government pronouncements regarding the shipping outlook, Mr W. A. Phillips, Chairman of Directors of the New Zealand Co-opera-tive Pig Marketing Association, said that to deny that the position was serious would be foolish, but as in most critical situations circumstances will not be improved by exaggeration . It has been stated by responsible sources that if a nornlal course is followed by producers in the sale of their live slock, the existing storage plus the additional emergency accommodation which is being provided will amply provide for this season's requirements. This assurance should be accepted and producers will ensure the best possible result by following the course indicated in the disposal of their fat stock. When questioned on the effect of the Government's request that in future all baeoncrs should be shipped in Wiltshire Sides, Mr Phillips stated that although the Commandeer price at f-o.b. for Wiltshire Sides is 8 1 2 d against 7Ud for car-: cases, because of the extra works charges and the weight shrinkage involved in the .removal of the head., backbone and trotters the nett return to exporters will be substantially reduced. Against this, however, freezing companies' space for pigs' will be increased by approximately one-third, while shipping companies will enjoy a similar advantage whiffh will »e reflected in lower feright «osts to the British Ministry of Food.

"We are living in difficult times,'' concludcd Mr Phillips, '"and the present is no time to quibble about these matters so leng as in the ultimate result wo are doing our utmost to help the Mother country."'
