Mushrooms Available. The warm rains have brought in their wake a growth of mushrooms in this district and at least one shop is offering a quantity of these delicacies for sale. Otimai Departs. The Northern Steamship Co's Otimai sailed for Auckland at midday yesterday. Her cargo included 2469 boxes of butter,324 crates of cheese, 111 sacks of maize and about 10 tons of sundries. A 'Bumper' Season. The consistent rain, plus the high returns already experienced on the Rangitaiki Plains, makes it fairly patent that the present season is likely to be a record one as far as butterfat returns are concerned. Rural Housing. Twenty-four loans, totalling £19,145, raised under the rural housing scheme, has been approved by the Raglan County Council. Of these, £9102 has already been expended, and six houses have been finished, while there are 14 building. Greetings from Egypt. Jn a letter to the Whakatane Caledonian Soflety, ex-band member, Pte Gordon Tippett, encloses an interesting greetings card, depicting a New Zealand soldier with a typical Eastern background. The card is in response to the Society's Christmas greetings sent to all exmembers after the annual meeting. Shore-fishing at Ohope. A newcomer to the beach Mr R. Crozicr of Palmerston North, claims that Ohope affords the finest shore fishing of any beaches he has visited. Almost every evening lately he has fished directly into the breakers with astonishing success. The best catch was on Monday evening when five large schnapper -were landed and one kawhai. Mr Crozier uses a line with about 20 baited hooks. Steady Rain. With still a Avcek of January to go the rain recorded to date has exceeded that experienced during this month of last year, the steadyfall of yesterday having been largely responsible for the increase. For the 24 hours to 8 a.m. to-day 2.20 inches fell making the total to date for the month 5.62 inches. Last year the measure for January Avas 5.02 inches. Storage of Potatoes. Anyone can successfully store potatoes provided that tAvo rules are borne in mind. First the potatoes must be dry. Dig them in fine.weather and - leave them on the surface to dry for a feAV hours. If necessary complete drying under coA r er and irr the dark. Secondly, store in Woxes or sacks in a frostproof building. All light must be excluded to prevent the potatoes from greening.
