MAIN MEAL IS TROUT SOUTH ISLAND FIGURES The stomachs of 199 shags shot in a A r ear in the South Islapd contained 644 trout, three eels. 18 lampreys, 16 perch, three flounders and (21 bullies. Figures were prepared for the council of the South Island Acclimatisation Societies by Mr H. G. Williams, of Dunedin, and presented at a meeting of the council, Most of the shags were shot in Otago and Southland but there were a few in Nelson, South Canterbury and the Lakes District. The length of trout varied from 2in to 16 The biggest trout Avas found upside the only shag shot at \ Lee stream, near Dunedin. Most of thic trout averaged between Tin and lOin in length. The lampreys were all at least Ift long and the longest Was 16in. The longest perch was 7in and the average size was 4in. Only three shags had eaten flounder and these were at Pourakino, Southland.
