REGENT
Tonight and again 'tomorrow, "Raffles" with David- Niven, Olivia de Havilland. The man who gave as "Mr Chips" and "Pygmalion" now brings to the screen a modern version ol' this sparkling comedy-ro-mance. "Raffles" dramatises the story of a sauve and dapper gentleman crook, who moves in the highest society and is known as a champion cricketer. Don't miss the next change. "South of Samoa," Dorothy Lamour, Robjt. Preston. Lynne Overman, J. Carroll Naish. In glorious Technicoilour! Photographed in colour, "South of Samoa" shows up the swaying palms and golden bcaches to advantage. Dorothy Lamour is attractive in her scant and colourful costumes, as the girl; Robert Preston, as Johnny, the reclaimed derelect, gives, humour to his part; but it is to Lynne Overman as the skipper, that most praise should; be given. His characterisation of the tough old salt whom nothing seems to disturb and who takes on the aspect of an old->timc pirate, is well up to stamlar.d. J. Carroll Naish, as the self-important lieutenant who tries to make a getaway in the submarine and forgets to close' the hatches, is also good. The climax is splendid—the fire subdued by the terrific onslaught of wind and water and, in the end, the blackened branches of the trees standing out against the sky where so short a time before Avas the green beauty of the forest. You don't know* what real excitement is until you have seen the stirring episodes of this great Paramount Picture ! !
