UNFORTUNATE CASE
DRUNK AND DISORDERLY MEDICAL OBSERV ATI ON " ORDERED A remand for medical "observation was ordered in the case of Geo.f* frey Arclicr, labourer who appeared before Messrs G. G. Lucas and R. Schofield, J.P\:. in the Whakatano Court last Friday, in answer to V charge of drunk and -disorderly behaviour, obscene language, and wilful damage.
Sergeant. FarrcJl stated that accused had been- brought to the station by a taxi-driver and two civilians as he had refused to leave the car.- He had been drinking heavily and w*as in a demented state. Prior to his arrest he had broken two panes iof glass the property of Samuel Armstrong and when accosted had used the language complained of. He had been working in the l Paper Mills and had relatives at Ohope. They; however would not have anything to do witJNJiim and in view of his mental state had asked the police to commit him to a suitable institution. Archer in a rambling statement to the police declared himself toi be on side with the police. He pleaded guil ty to all charges but laid the blame on those responsible for his upbringing. He continued, in disjointed fashion, to inform the Court that somebody was endeavouring to rob him of his own mind, but he could-nan 'prove this. Al Ihe time; -hd pleaded not to be adjudged mentally insane. After a brief adjournment he w r as sentenced as above and was endeavouring to address thei Court again when the hearing was adjourned.
