"DEAL ME A DECK"
A GREAT BOTJT ON THE TROOPSHIP "500" CHAMPIONSHIP DECIDED ' Whakatane readers will recognise two names mentioned in the following account of the "500" Waterloo staged on board a Third Echelon troopship:— Company Sgt. Majbr Pearce and Sgt. Flett, who have established an all time high in the "500" world, met their Waterloo last-evening at the hands of u pair of rank outsiders, Corporals Ward and Widdy Chambers.
It was a great bout. A crowd tense expectant and eager for blood watch ed the players as they bent over the Iloodlit table. The air was electric and the toUilisator ringing. Company Sgt Major Pearce dealt a new deck. His handling was superb. Sgt Allen, newly risen from his bed, threatened to upset the apple cart when lie accused Corporal Ward of palming a card up his sleeve. When the smoke clcared the tabic was relaid and the contestants rolled up their sleeves to prevent any jnisuiH derstanding. It was a grand tussle. Sgt Fktt 'opened the bidding; the bids bounded across the table until both pairs had irreconcileably committed them selves. Joker, right, left bowercd and thundered until finally the two from the lower deck cantered in to a splendid finish, riding a quietly confident bid of ten no trumps. The boys turned to collect but unfortunately the totalisator keeper. Corporal Lloyd, had been called to a conference witlt his Company Commander.
