Good Endeavour League. Owing to space pressure it has been found necessary to hold over the children's page until Monday. Aliens Tribunal. The Aliens Tribunal visited Whakatane and Taneatua last weekr-end. It is understood that five aliens were interrogated. Raffle. A large Christmas cake, made by Mrs W. P. Browne, is at present on display at the Red Cross Society's Strand shop, where it is being raffled for the society's funds. Tickets may be obtained at the shop. Ragwort Eradication. Mr C. H. Biebner's summary of the ragwort eradication carried out on Crown and unindividualised native lands shows that good progress has been made in the Pekatahi, Edgecumbe m.'l Te Teko,, Waimana and Manawahe areas. Stone Fruit Ea,rlier. Stone fruit appears to be earlier this year than in more normal seasons. Christmas plums have ripened already in some Whakatane gardens and orchards due to the prolonged, warm spell followed by two days of rain. Grant for Ohope Footpath'. The Engineer reported to the j County Council that the cost of carrying the Pohutukawa Avenue footpath for a farther twenty, chains would approximate £40. On the motion of the chairman;, Mr J. L. Burnett, a grant for the amount was made. Fifth Reinforcements. . Lieutenant C. A. Head, recruiting officer for this district, advises that he has been informed by areia. headquarters that the> Paeroa military area's quota for the Fifth Reinforcements has been increased to 495. This will mean that evefry avail ablo man, including some of those drawn in the recent ballot for overseas service, will be required. Those due for mobilisation are again urged to immediately notify any change of address. Two Rabbits in Whakatane ! ! I An extraordinary slaughter of rabbits was revealed in the rep(|,t of the East Coast Rabbit Board, tabled at the monthly meeting last week.. In the. Bay of Plenty- section two rabbits were caught during the month. Seventeen were,killed at the Wairoa end of the district. It might interest readers to know 7 that the casualties indicted on the Bayi of Plenty's rabbit population were in the Whakatane County.
