NEW YEAR'S EVE CARNIVAL
WHAKATANETS New year's Eve Carnival is shaping up healthily. All departments are functioning well ancl there appears to be nothing- overlooked as far as the general preparations are concerned. The Carnival proper will commence at 2 p.m. with the children's afternoon session and will conclude with the Midnight Ball in the Winter Show Hall. The festivities which include organised fun in the streets, a grand procession of decorated vehicles, and a demonstration at midnight are planned on a scale usually adopted by larger centres and with the full co-operation of the general publici should provide an occasion truly memorable and enjoyable.
Examination. The medical examination of those reservists from this district drawn in the will be completed to-morrow. The results last Saturday revealed the same consistently high standard that has marked all medical examinations of recruits from the Whakatane area. So far as is known Whakatane will be the only centre to complete the examination before Christmas.
A Special Effort. The local Red Cross shop committee is making a special effort for Christmas week. Besides the usual stock ol' produce, etc. there is the added attraction of a Xmas Tree decorated with seasonal gifts. The premises will bs open every day until and including Xmas EVe and on Monday and Tuesday of the following week-.
