ATTEMPTED SUICIDE

ELDERLY LABOURER CONVICTED WORRIED BY LEVY ARREARS Appearing before Mr E* L. Walton. S.M,, in the Whakatane Magistrate's Court yesterday, Alexander Thomson, aged 52, a labourer/ elected summary jurisdiction on a charge of attempted suicide and pleaded guilty. - Sergeant M. Farrell said that accused, a single man, had fallen into arrears with his Social Security levy. He was a sensitive type and the prospects of heavy fines for him self and his employer had worried him. Defendant had spent three weeks in hospital and had been in gaol on remand.

Thomson was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within 12 months.
