SPEEDING ALLEGED
EFFORT TO LIMIT 20 M.P.H. AT OHOPE The .danger of Pohutukawa Avenue becoming a death-trap for children staying at the Beach unless stringent measures are employed to limit the speed of vehicles using the road was ventilated at the meeting of Ohope residents on Wednesday evening. Mr T. P* Dowling claimed that the average motorist looked upon this narrow road as something of a speed-track and apart from the dust nuisance which was created by the swift-moving vehicles, it presented a very grave danger to toddlers and even older children playing in the vicinity, and who might step from the scrub on to the roadway. To his mind the speed limit should be fixed at 20 m.p.h., in view of the overgrown nature of the roadsides and the very limited vision.
He was supported by Councillor McCready who said he had noticed the danger himself and would make representations to see that the side growths were cleared. The position was a difficult one at the present time as far as the council was concerned, for while there existed the chance that the main highway would follow that route there was no point in the council taking steps to improve the thoroughfare to any extent. Until this was decided* it would not be'wise to spend any great sum on laying a first class road. It was a case of making the best of what they had.
The following motion, by Mr Dowling, was then carried: That this meeting urges Lhe County Coun cil to represent to the Transport Board that a limit of 20 m.p.h., be fixed for all traffic using the Beach Road at Ohope.
