TRANSPORT DEPARTMENT'S PROSECUTIONS

RANGE OF OFFENCES

Tlie list of prosecutions brought for breaches of the Traffic Regulations was somewhat lighter than usual when Mr E. L. Walton, S.M, visited Whakatane for the month]y sitting of the Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Charges of failing to possess current warrants of fitness,, usually many, numbered only three, and other charges included exceeding the speed limit, no lights on a vehicle and failures to hold heavy traffic licenses. - With the exception of two, in which the prosecutions was brought by County Traifie Inspector A. Carling, cases were presented for the Transport Department by Traffic Inspector J. H. Delves. Failing to possess warrants of fitness cost Jack Hunia 10s and 17s costs; Hilmar Moen (Mr Otley) convicted and ordered to pay costs; Keshav. Pars'ot, 10s and costs. Defective lights on his vehicle cost Lance Nattrass £1 and costs. Douglas Mclntish exceeded the 30 m.p.h. speed limit (in fact, said the Inspector, he did 50 m.p.h. in Domain Road), and he was fined £2 and costs. The same charge was preferred against Frederick James Harold McCracken (Mr Otley) and a similar fine was imposed. Two Charges Thomas Davies, charged with operating Avithout a heavy traffic license, was fined £3 and costs after the Inspector had told the magistrate that defendant had had numerous warnings and previous licenses. Later the County Inspector proceeded against the same defendant and a fine of £2 .with. £1 15s costs was imposed Colin McKay, E. A. 'W. Cubis and Heremai Riini were each charged with, riding an unlighted cycle. 5s and costs was the penalty in. the first two cases, costs amounting to 23s being considered sufficient penalty in the case of Riini.
