INCREASE NECESSARY

HOSPITAL BOARD'S LOAN FIFTY PER CENT ADDITIONAL COST Because the plans for addiV -tions to the maternity annexe and domestic quarters and the removal of the isolation block ait the Whakatane Hospital have had by circumstances to be enlarged, it has been found that the loan of £4000, recently aur* thorised, will not be sufficient and the Bay of Plenty Hospital Board has made application fqr the raising of an additional £2000. It was reported at the monthly meeting of the Board, held yesterday, that the plans for the improvements had been approved and an application had gone forward to the responsible Minister for permission to build. As soon as that permission is obtained, and it should be within a day or two, the Board will be in a position to call tenders for the work. Provisional estimates made show that the cost of building alone will be in the vicinity of £4,700 and add? Ed to that will be the cost of heating in the annexe, estimated at £400, and the necessary furnishings and fittings, etc; In a statement yesterday, Mr J. W. Sumner, Chairman of theBoard, said that as far as he could see the increase in the. loan would not make for an increase in rates, present levies being sufficient to cover the added amount.
