BOOKS FOR TROOPS
REQUEST TO THE PUBLIC A CARE IN THE SELECTION An appeal has been issued for books and -magazines suitable for the troops and residents with novels and periodicals to spare are asked to leave them at the Whakatane Public Library/ The result of the last appeal was an excellent response from the public—excellent, that is, in quantity. But, unfortunately, of the 4000 books and magazines which came to hand, barely 000 were worth sending away. The bulk had to be consigned to the Pulp Mills. The discards were mainly women's magazines and papers, entirely unsuitable for rugged masculine consumption and it was a slur on the mentality of the prospective recipients that the donors should consider the appeal a fit medium for rubbish dumping. It is hoped that the new appeal Avill be met with a careful l selection instead of insulting the standard of intelligence of the boys on service.
