! COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN'S APPEAL CONFIDENCE IN WHAKATANEI Following the decision of the Whakatane Patriotic Com miittee to launch its appeal for funds through the BEACON, the committee chairman, Mr W. Sullivan, outlines the objectives and reasons for the appeal and expresses his committee's confidence in the residents of Whakatane in a letter to the Editoir. The letter reads: — "With your permission I desire to draw the attention of the public to the effort now being made to lind otir quota fowards the London Relief and Rehabilitation Fund. The objective of the Auckland Provincial Council is to raise a sum of £250,000 over the next six months. Of this sum the Bay of Plenty Zone Is asked to raise £15,000, and the sum allotted to our Borough and County is £3750. Of this £3750 the Borough on this occasion has undertaken to find £1125. Organised effort is now in train to raise this sum. The Ladies' Patriotic Committee is to ,b.e asked to lind £250 to £300 and the Men's Committee the balance. "At a meeting of the Men's; Committee held on Thursday evening last it was agreed to take advantage of the made by the Beacon Office to act as a receiving agency for donations. A similar list will be opened at the Borough Gf-< fice and it is desired that alJi subscriptions be published' in; the Beacon. "The London Relief Fund is realty urgent and must take precedence over all other appeals, and my committee makes a direct appeal to all subscribers to.lend a hand immediately and help reach the amount aimed at. "Funds subscribed over and above the sum required for our share of the London Relief Fund will remain in the Auckland Provincial Fund and will be used for Re ha hilitation Assistance to soldiers and their near, relatives, and in a scor-j of other ways. "In addition to this direct appeal to the public, the Men's Committee is to direct a drive to sell tickets on the Art Union now in progress and will at a later date conduct a more intensive canvas for donations. I am satisfied that a direct appeal to the public of Whakatane will result in donations equal to the sum aimed at, and our district will not be behind in this important appeal. Therefore I ask the public to fill the list early, thus demonstrating our desire to do by financial assistance that which we are unable to do in other ways.
"Finally let me express the committee's appreciation of the Leal given by those who have already subscribed and to yo\i, Sir, for the ready assistance you have always given."
