Harbingers of Spring. Daffodils are to be seen in the local gardens aplenty at the present time but one of the finest displays is the garden of Mr Luke Rangi, Alexandria Road, Kopeopeo. Solid beds of selected blooms go to make a wonderful show which is a delight to the eye. Arms Inspection. The 21 owners of .303 rifles and .15 and .5 revolvers who have not yet had their arms inspected are requested to take them to the Whakatane Policc Station by noon on Saturday. This matter is one of extreme urgency. Community Sing. The community sing will be held as usual in the King Street Hall this evening. Last week it was found ne-. cessary to turn away a number of people who arrived late and found the hall filled to capacity and those wishing to enjoy this form of entertainment are advised to be there early. Proceeds will go to patriotic funds. Back to School Again. Yesterday, juvenile Whakatane's 'crept like snails unwillingly to school' agaiiVj, after the mid-winter vacation. The holidays on the whole were of a high ordler, and the weather was kind until the final week. The children to the casual observer appeared to be in high spirits and the school grounds lacked .nothing of their usual animation once the young scholars had arrived and made themselves at home. . Early Crops at Ohope. s Ohopeans are justly proud of the early crops they are enabled by the mildness of the climate to produce and therewith astound visitors from other parts. A conversation yesterday between two beachsiders produced the astounding information that one of them had enjoyed the first green peas of the season last Sunday. The other replied that till a month ago he had still collected naturally rijjened tomatoes and thnt more astounding still he had enjoyed ripe strawberries right through the winter. Dance in Wairaki Meetinghouse. With a keen desire to do their bit towards the 'Spitfire for Victory' fund' which has been inaugurated in the BEACON" the local Maoris have decided to promote a dance in the Wairaka Meetinghouse on Saturday evening next. All arrangements are now' complete and it is hopecl; as a result of the fixture to be. able to hand over a presentable sum !to augment the existing fund. A special invitation is extended to Pake-* has to patronise , the event and asisist in the worthiest cause of the 'day.
