SECRET DRAWERS
OLD WRITING CABINET CLEVER CONSTRUCTION A member of the staff of a New Ptymouth firm of auctioneers, -while closely examining an old writing cabinet sent to the auction rooms for sale, discovered two cleverly constructed secret drawers operated by a concealed spring. He happened to touch a small wooden- projection just inside the edge of the cabinet, and immediately the back of a ledge supporting a pen rest flew open to reveal the hidden drawers. Cabinets of this type have a concealed dlraAV, but as . a rule they are fairly obvious. This specimen, however, is con- I sidered to be exceptional in the wealth of work that has been used to make the discovery of the drawers a task to tax the ingenuity of a I searcher. The cabinet, a fine specimen of its kind, is built of polished walnut and cedar, and is thought to be in the vicinity of 200 years old. In it is embodied all the beautiful work-, manship of its age. Unopened, the cabinct is.about 18in long and 12in wide, the width expanding to 20in when the cabinet is opened.
