NEW POWER SCHEME
OPERATIONS AT KARAPIRO About 100 i —m are now engaged on the hydroelectric construction scheme at Karapiro, near Cambridge. A large undertaking has been the. housing of the men and their families. A store is practically completed, and a social hall will probably have facilities for the show ing of moving pictures. The school arrangements for the children of workers are under discussion. Access roads to the site of the works and the settlement have been formed and metalling is proceeding. Power lines nnd telephone wires are being erected and to make available the power for the working of machinery, a transformer station will be provided. The two temporary shafts from which the tunnel, will be constructed to divert the flow of the Waikato River during the construction of the coffer dams and permanent dam will be about 120 feet deep, and work on these is well under way. A start will soon be made on the land excavations for the dam. It is estimated that 200 000- tons of metal will be used on the site.
