ECHO OF WAR
SINKING OF DUNVEGAN CASTLE' I - LOCAL BOY ON BOARD .With the news of the sinking of the British armed merchantman 'Dunvegan Castle,' which occurred on Saturday, we are informed by Mr A. J. Canning, of King Street, that his -son, Maynard, a well known Whakatane boy, was a member of the ship's complement. Information as to the safety of the crew is at present Very meagre but Mr Canning has the utmost confidence that his son, who is an excellent swimmer, can be expected to show plenty of initiative in the face of any emergency. Mr Maynard Canning, we understand, was signed on as a member of the 'Dunvegan Castle's' crew for a period of twelve months, and up to the present had been engaged on voyages of convoy between Africa, America and the Old Country. Mr Canning's confidence 1 in his sob's safety will be endorsed by all Whakatane generally.
