A RECOMMENDATION

MAINTENANCE OF RUATOKI BRIDGE P.W.D. ENGINEER'S LETTER The Public Works Department's District Engineer, acknowledging receipt of the Whakatane County Council's letter dealing with the Ruatoki Native Development Scheme, requested the council to show why it should not now assume full responsibility for the full maintenance of the Ruatoki Bridge and approaches thereto as from August 1. The Engineer a(kled that the rest of the roading could be given consid**' eration when next he was in the area.

The Works Committee recommend ed that until the matter of the rating of Ritatoki is finalised, the council should advise the District Engineer that it is not prepared to accept responsibility. This recommendation was adopted by the council. • « « * Mr J. L. Burnett, Chairman of the Whakatane County Council, has visited Auckland to attend a meeting of the Auckland Provincial Patriotic Council, of which he is a member. Mr W. A. McCracken acted in his stead at the monthly meeting of the County Council yesterday. Mr B. T. Dodds,, of the County Council office staff, was grantedi three months leave of absence by the council at its meeting yester- 1 day. Mr Dodds will go into camp witli the Territorials at Waioru in October.
