MAORI CALENDAR

REVIVAL ACHIEVED FORECASTING BY THE STARS Nearly 50 years' research, experimenting, study and plain hard work have been devoted by Mr P. H. Tomoana, of Hastings, to the revival of an ancient Maori calendar and charts, and he has now at last satisfied himself that he has achieved a life-long ambition to revive them Star reading is the basis of the calculations which the Maoris, in pre-whitc settlement times, used for such purposes as forecasting the weather, the corresponding planting of crops and . the arrangement of fishing expeditions. In fact, practically all their organised social and industrial life Avas arranged in accordance with the calendar, and its indications, which are closely related to knowledge of the stars, by which the Maoirs distinguished themselves as navigators and originally came to New Zealand. "I am satisfied that with the calendar which I have reconstructed I can forecast the weather with reasonable accuracy," said Mr T;b~ moana, in displajnng his calendar and charts. He added that he was excccdinglj r gratified to have bujli [the calendar up on,lines used by the ancient Maoris, as he had been engaged on the task since J 892.
