SEASON'S EXPORT KILLINGS INCREASE OF 18 PER CENT. New Zealand meat production for export this season up to 3rd August was 18 per cent, higher than in the preceding comparable period. Details of the killings for export at all works from Ist October, 1939 till 3rd August, 1940 issued by the New Zealand Meat Producers Board show the following results which are com pared with the period Ist October, 1938 to 31st July, 1939. 1939-40 1938-39 (601b freight carcases) North Island 8,933,980 7,187,223 South Island 3,834,014 3,632,569 Total 12,767,994 10,819,792 The increase, represented • in freight carcases, has been 1,948,202, Lamb killings: 5,308,y19S in the North Island and 5,073,397 in the South Island—totalled 10,381,595, be ing an increase of 639,092, the North Island advance being 568,103 and the South Island 70,,989.

Wether mutton killings: North Island 1,131 f 151 and South Island .175,706 —totalled 1,306,857, showing a reduction of 139,038, but mutton production as .a whole was substantially in advance of the previous season, as the killings of ewes for export rose by 760,732.. North Island killings were 1,219,352, and South Island 700,210 a total of 1,919,562. '■ Under the Imperial purchase arrangement, all beef is exported as frozen, therefore previous exports of chilled beef are grouped with frozen for comparative purposes. The beef killings (in quarters) show an increase of. 285,172 quarters, the total being 087,058 (North Island 672,515 and South Island 14.543). Killings of porkers (97,771 in the North Island 3756 in the South Island) totalled 101,527, which is a drop of 252,490. However, the decline is more than made up by increased killings of the heavier we'ght baconers. North Island killings were 313,964 —Son 111 Island 11773, a total of .325,737 or 139,06:) above those of the previous season. When the production of porlc of botli classes is compared on a we'ght basis,- this season's killings show an improvement to the extent of 11,392 freight carcases.
