RATS

Sir, —'Citizen's' question" regarding the responsibility for the destruction of the V rats« at the Borough Council rubbish tip is one that, many are asking. At the present time this town is absolutely over-run with rats and the problem is a very serious one. Though they may not be causing too much dam-* age now, think of the terrible result they would have if an epidemic were to start. Rodents carry disease quicker than anything else and an effort should be made to exterminate Whakatane's increasing poimlat'ion. before ,it is too l ate. Surely it would not be asking too much of Borough Council or the Harbour Board, whichever. is responsible, to lay poison at the refuse dump in Sufficient quantities; to , ensure the total destruction of these loathsome, dangsrous pes.ts. Citizen says he has seen some thfe size of cats, and in case there are people inclined to regard this as ail exaggeration, I will add that I have also seen the giant species. Sir, il is said of the Britflsh that they are slow but in the end they get things done. In this town the people would have a similar char-* acteristic only for the fact that they never get things done. Anyhow, it is up to the responsible authorities to stamp out the growing colony of rats before it is "too late. Yours etc., ANOTHER CITIZEN.
