COUNCIL'S SUPPORT OF PLUNKET SOCIETY GRANT AT FIRST DECLINED At the meeting of the Borouglj Finance Committee a letter Avas received from the Whakatane branch of the Plunket Society intimating that it had not received grants from the Council during the past two financial years, application having been overlooked in consequence of a change of officers. P«.etrospective application was made. The Finance Committee's recommendation was that a grant of £5 be made for the year ended March 31, 1939, and that a grant for the year ended March 31, 1940, be declined. In addition it was recommended that the Society be asked; to submit an application for a grant for the current year accompanied by a certified copy of it-Si last balance sheet, when the application would receive consideration. Gr Sullivan said that the attitude was not sportsmanlike. Now was the time to give £50. Cr Sullivan pointed out that the Council subsidised the Band, the Domain,, the Reading Room, etc., and the Plun-» ket Society was entitled to support. He moved that the sum of £5 be paid for each year, subject to a balance sheet being submitted. Cr A. J. Canning seconded the motion and it was carried.
