PROPOSED ''GIFT SHIP'" TO ENGLAND MANY OFFERS RECEIVED ' 4? . ; Many inquiries have been received regarding the recent suggestion by Mr A. J. Canning that a shipload of butter should be despatched from New Zealand as a gift to the people of England. It appears that the local farmers are on the Avhole anxious to co-operate, while there are also numerous businessmen in Whakatane itself who have declared their willingness to pay the equivalent of a cwt box of butter. The following letter received by Mr Canning is typical:— "I have read , with interest yoJur suggestion of sending a gilt of butter to Great Britain. If the co-op-eration of the shipping companies and the watersiders could be obtained, so that the cargo would be absolutely free, I am sure the farmers would provide "the goods" and I am quite prepared to donate one box towards the scheme on condition that it Avill be a free charge. Washing the scheme all success.'*— H. E. Missen, Awaken.
