LEAGUE OF MOTHERS

MONTHLY MEETING HELD LIFE IN FINLAND The monthly meeting of the League was held in Knox Halll on Tuesday last. Mrs Sullivan presided over a good attendance of mem-v bers and friends. * The meeting was opened with the reading of tire Rules and Objects of the League. Miss M. Whiteside gave a very interesting address on Finland. She described the Finnish people as being of very good physique; possessing great vitality and being deeply religious. Everybody works in Finland, girls, women, men and boys, and the women receive equal rates of pay with men. The summer is short and everyone works until exhausted—then rest—and start again The soil is very poor and it is only the industry of the people that enables them to derive a living from it. Finland was the only country of the world that paid its 1914-d.S War Debt in full. The people are also great educationalists and we have now many evidences of their culture in literature and art. Mrs Appleby then played the Valse Trieste by Gibellius (one of the most famous of their pianoforte compositions). > Mrs K. Schoficld sang "Be Still' My Soul" by a Finnish composer These two items were greatly appreciated by all present. Afternoon tea was served by mem bers of the committee, and, the meet ing closed with the National Anthem.
