MAGISTRATE'S COURT

MONTHLY SITTING CASES QUICKLY DISPOSED OF The monthly sitting of the Whakatane Magistrate's Court was held yesterday, Mr E. L. Walton, S.M., being on the Bench. Commencing at ten o'clock thirty-two criminal charges were heard and disposed of and sundry civil claims, including one defended, were heard in quick I time, the Court rising at 11.30. The sole charge of possessing an unlicensed radio set preferred yesterday was against Wi Haumate and after evidence been given by Mr Churcher, Postmaster at Tan eatua, a line of 10s was inflicted, with £1 5s costs. Police Prosecutions. Constable Rice prosecuted Tui Tawhara, charged with not possessing a drivers' license and defendant was fined 15s and the costs were 15s Komcre Turawhenua and Porti Tohoro were charged with converting to their own use a bicycle, valued at £4, the property of George Symmans. The latter appeared to answer a second count of a similar nature. Constable Rice, prosecuting, detailed the facts and added that both youths were a bit lazy, being not too fond of work and spending some time around billiard saloons. Turawhenua was fined £1 and £1 5s costs, while the fines recorded against Tohoro were £1 and £2, with costs 19s and 15s respectively. On Licensed Premises after Hours. There were no appearances when James Johnston, Robert Menary, K. George Woods, Allan Raymond, George Flavell and Jack Butterworth were called to answer charges of being found on licensed premises after hours. Constable R. A. A. Prater said that he and Sergeant M. Farrell visited the Whakatane Hotel premises at 5.30 p.m ; . on April 19 th and foiind the defendants in the backyard. They gave varying excuses for their presence. • Each defendant was fined £1 and ordered to pay costs.
