PIGEONS AND TUIS SHOT FIVE YOUTHS CHARGED "This has ahvays been regarded as a serious offence," said the magistrate, Mr £J. L. Walton, in Opotiki Police Court on Friday morning, Avhen five youths faced charges of shooting and being in possession of pigeons. "The accused knew they Avere doing something wrong, and the Court must stop this," continued the magistrate,. in imposing a fine of £5 each and £1 and 10s costs on the first charge and £1 10s costs each on the charge of being in possession of absolutely protected birds. The offence took place on 7tli May at Woodlands to the rear of Amakura Station and the youths charged Avere Iri Kora, Rua Ruru, Archie TaAA-hara, Niko Koroua and Muni Koroua Tai, all of Waioeka, their ages ranging from 22 to 26. All pleaded guilty. On the table in front of the Bench Avere sixteen pigeons and four tuis, spoils of the hunt, which were ordered to be handed over to the hos--pital. FiA r e single barrel shot guns and a quantity of ammunition AA'ere also on display, the magistrate commenting that these also should be confiscated.
