OPOTIKI COURT ONXY ONE POLICE CASE The monthly sitting of the Magis-* trate's Court was held in tlie Opotiki Courthouse, on Monday, before Mr E. L» Walton, S.M. There was an exceptionally long list of civil claims, while there was only one case brought forward by the Police and Transport Department?. An old age pensioner, Repanga Tupara (Mr Hei) faced three charges- for offences committed on 4th May. The charges were: being found' drunk ir. a public place, that during the currency of a? prohibition order he entered an hotel, and that Ite procured liquor; • Tlie magistrate warned accused that lie would be in danger of losing his pension if he did not take care. Accused' was fined £2 on the first? charge, £1 and 10s costs on the sec* ond charge, and was convicted and ordered to pay 10s costs on the third charge. Overloading". • The Transport Department proceeded against Mervyn Meiklejohit .for driving a motor vehicle which was so overloaded as to be dangerous. Inspector Delves, who prosecuted, said he saw the car stop on a corner and let three children out., When he later stopped the car there* were another 16 children in it, 12 in the rear and 4 in the front, making a total of 19 altogether. The maximum permitted was 10'. Defendant said that he usually * had a larger car on the run but on that occasion he had only a smal$ c car. A fine of £1 with 10s costs was. imposed.
