HEAVY RAIN
DOWNPOUR AT WEEK-END POSTPONEMENT OF FOOTBALL On Saturday and again yesterday morning Whakatane experienced the heaviest fall or rain since that recorded during the last week-end in February. Commencing at about 7 a.m. on Saturday, the fall was particularly intense until 2.30 p.m., when it slackened somewhat, to recommence and continue In the evening. At times the rain was carried by a wind of considerable velocity, which varied between North-East and North West, There have been no reports of Hooding or slips and apparently no damage was caused by the downpour, but sporting activities were curtailed and the opening of the football competitions was postponed. The fall on Saturday, recorded by Mr Muscutt, amounted to .70 inches and that on Sunday to .85 inches. The fall over the early hours of this morning registered .23, and the total for the ■ Aveek-cnd Avas 1.78 inches. This Avas .04 in advance of the total fall for last month Avhen 1.74 inches were recorded. The year's total to date is 13.96 inches.
