FORTHCOMING WINTER SHOW
Whakatane's Winter Show has earned for 'itself a wide reputation as an exhibition and demonstration of the progress of the town and the fertility of the district in which it stands. Already arrangements are well in hand for the next show which falls due next month on the 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th of May. The executive is taking very active steps to ensure that this year the display will eclipse in variety and exhibits all other previous fixtures. Farmers and. horticulturalists are reminded that now is the time to take stock of their crops with a view to selecting suitable vegetables., root crops ,maize etc which may be suitable for entering. It has to be remembered that the show, is actually the "people's show" which the executive, in spite of all the difficulties to contend with at the present time is endeavouring to make the best of and even effect improvements.
A Current Rumour. A rumour is going the rounds at present about some strange lights seen off the coast north of W hakatane on a recent night. The lights have been put down to enemy activities and a ship in distress but the hardest thing to find out is who started the rumour.
500 Evening. The lirst of a series of fortnightly 500 evenings was held in the Parish Hall by the St. George Tennis Club last Tuesday evening. The prizes being won by Mrs N,. S. Major and Mr J. Chougher. A tasty supper was served by the ladies of the committee.
