Mr H. Museutt, reporting on the weather for lhe month of April* states that the rainfall in Whakatane totalled 1.71 inehes against 2.88 1 inches for the same month last year. Rain fell on 11 days. The total for the year is now 12.11 inches against a bare 0.895 ns for the first four months last year. The driest April occurred in 1925 (I.3sins) and the wettest in 1938 when the record figures of 10,18 were registered. Coughs and Colds. The very changeable weather now Joeing experienced is no doubt re- 1 sponsible for the seasonable crop of coughs and colds Avith which Whakatane appears to be inflicted. The Strand seems to echo to a permanent bark from the inflamed thoraxes and dammed-up respiratories of the entire business section. The elusive "flu too appears to be going the rounds and napping a goodly number of unsuspecting victims. Shakespeare in Court. An apt Shakespearian quotation was made by Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M. in the Magistrate's Court on Tuesday morning when counsel, in making a plea for defendant, stated that having a natural fear of the consequences of the inference from, certain circumstances, he had tried to hide certain facts from a constable. "Thus conscience doth make cowards of us al l /' quoted Mr Paterson when imposing a fine. Historic Maketu. Outstanding incidents in the history of the Arawa tribe, and particularly Maketu, the landing place of the Arawa canoe, are related in the centennial publication "Historical Maketu." Written by Mrs E. Tapsell, a descendant of Hans Tapsell, the trader who arrived at Make.tti in the early years of the last century, the book covers the years between the arrival in 1840 and the final defeat of the anti-Government forces in the Maketu saml-hills 76 years ago. A resident of St. Albans, Ghristchurcli, goes one better than the j Aucklander whose dog rescued an escaping budgerigar by holding it down with his paw until the owner arrived. His story is that he also had a budgie, and that his neighbour's dog has appointed himself guardian of the pet. The dog, a small retriever, will mount guard over the bird at times when it is allowed out of its cage,, and at the approach of any stranger he will pick the bird up in his jaws and carry him to the door of it,s cage and allow the bird to hop inside. The bird appears to enjoy the dog's companionship, and is certainly not afraid of being held in its mouth.
