AROUND TOWN

JOTTINGS FROM THE BOROUGH EDUCATED HORSES NEEDED Readers may remember complaints made by Kopeopeo residents some time ago about cruelty to animals. Tlv.>se complaints, -which were published in the Beacon at the time, referred to injuries caused to cats and it was stated that someone with a particularly vicious nature was responsible. The tumult and the shouting died and Kopeopeo enjoyed peace until the night the fire siren sounded. All is now quite on that front. A resident from further afield} Bridge Street to be' exact, now suggests that there might be something in altering the phrase 'cruelty to animals' and making it 'cruelty hy 1 animals.' Yesterday three horses entered the front gate and did their best to upset the best laid plans of horticultural inspiration. They exhibited a complete disregard for the borders and plots and trampled indiscriminately on all within their ken. The resident expressed the hope that if people must allow their horses to wander, they should at least train them to walk only or; the garden paths.

Yesterday there was not the slightest ripple on the surface and the depths, appearing as though frozen, mirrored a cloi-d----less sky. « m m m The shops fronting the King Street Hall, for long presenting a charred appearance after the fire which completely gutted the lefthand portion, have been re-built and the final touches are at present being added.
