GROUNDS IMPROVED

POLICE STATION AND COURTHOUSE model village appearance Under the direction of Serjeant M. Farrell the grounds surrounding the Whakatane Police Station am! gaol are being cleaned up and pieparations are being made for the laying of lawns in most of the area. It is proposed to plant a hedge to divide the Courthouse grounds from those of the station, house and gaol and when this is done it will add greatly to the appearance of the block. Vegetables are grown in the plots around the gaol and the work here is done by prisoners sentenced from the Whakatane Court to terms of one month or under. The grounds surrounding the Courthouse have been vastly improved and brightened by the Clerk of Court, Mr T. Morgan, whose interest in horticulture is evidenced by the lawn borders. It is understood that the erection of a fovtfce to cut off these grounds from the Pa is under consideration by the Department of Jnstieo, Viewed from the road the whole -~cnnts the appearance of a model yiv-"- • ' - • ; - ; village and while this thought may not be solid comfort for those with occasion to visit this particular 'area, it is in keeping with Whakatan"'s progress and will blend with any 10^n—p 1 a.n I*l ing scheme.
