ROAD IMPROVEMENT

Sir—Some time ago, when I had occasion to visit Whakatane and travel over the hill road to Ohope, I wrote a letter to the complaining about the corrugations and state of the road generally.. Visiting Whakatane last week, and travelling over the same road, X was agreeably surprised at the improvements that have been made in the last two months, or so. It is true that the surface is as badly rippled as it was when I was down this way previously, but this fact is more than offset by the increased visibility and the widening on the dangerous corners. ' It is evident that a great amount of work has been done and I think that the Borough Council, or whoever is the controlling body, is to be congratulated on the effort. I notice that work is being continued further up the road and what is done there should also make motoring conditions much easier. It is a pity, I think, that sufficient money could not be made available, either by the Government on a subsi4tfbasis, or else by the raising of for the work in this direction to be pushed ahead to a conclusion in keep ing with the rapid progress of Whakatane and district. It seems to me that in Ohope you have an asset which should be cared for and, ii seems logical to suppose thaj in* creased patronage of Ohope mean a corresponding increase in. business for this town. However, we appear to be getting away from the subject. Of course, the Municipal authorities, or whoever it is that exercises control over the highway to Ohope. know just how much money they can spend in this direction and it would seem that they are fully aware of their obligations as regards roading and are spending as much as possible in this way. Perhaps it is not too much to hope that in the not too distant future [ will visit Whakatane again and find that the road over the hills has been widened all the way—and tar-sealed. In the meanwhile, I, for one, am satisfied with the great improvements made. Yours etc., "VISITOR."
