INCREASE IN MARRIAGES COMPARISON IN FIGURES The Registrar. Mr T. Morgan* lia? made available the quarterly, stat-i istics for the Whakatane area, and these show that there was an increase of approximately 50 per cent in marriages for the quarter ending March 31st in comparison with, the same period last year. Relative figures are as follows, with last year's numbers in parentheses:— Births 45 (44), Deaths 10 (13), Marriages 22 (15). Civil and Criminal Cases. There were, 46 civil plaints for the quarter and the total' sued for was £795 ISs 7d. jThe amount recovered was £707 lis Id. The century mark was exceeded in the number of criminal cases and 99 males and 2 females were apprehended and summonsed. Fees and fines paid in respect of these cases totalled £254 4s 6d.
