WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

VOLUNTEER TURNED DOWN

THE APPEAL FOR MEN

It is hard to reconcile the experience of a young man in the. Whakatane district, with the widespread appeal for recruits, which is now being so intensely prosecuted by the Covernment. This young man Avho visited the office yesterday, stales that upon volunteering, he attended and passed. the medical board as A.i. in every respect. He was notified to this effect and as a result left his job with the intention of departing for cam]) with the first batch called up. As his name failed to appear, he considered it time to write headquarters for an explanation of the oversight. To his surprise he received the following letter from the Army Office 1 . Pacroa: "With reference to your letter of the 8t.1i., inst.. you have been placed in the Reserved Occupation Class, by the Social Security Department, hence cannot be called up for service yet. If you are re-classified as being available for service, you will be called up." The recipient who is keen lo do his bit, and had made all arrangements to do so, is puzzled to know just why his offer lias been rejected. He cannot understand how the Social Security Department enters into the matter or why when ablebodied men volunteer they should be turned down. Meanwhile he is without a job, and does not know 7 whether lie should await notification or seek further employment.
