MAORI WHO WANTED BEER BILLIARD-ROOM INCIDENT When Tom Wahapango Kingi, labourer, of Paroa, appeared before Mr H. L. Walton, S.M.. in the Magistrate's Court on Wednesday lie faced a charge of assaulting Cyril Edward Parkes on the Willi of December. Accused was on remand from January Sth. Constable F. M. Fuller slated thai on the night of December o'Oth, accused was in a billiard-room and was under the influence cf liquor. Complainant was playing billiards when Kingi approached, him and asked him to procure liquor. Complainant refused and on going outside lie "was followed by accuscd, .who struck him on the jaw. It was necessary for complainant to attend for X-ray and had to have his jaw set. Constable Fuller added that recused Avas going into camp with the Maori Battalion on the 2(5 th.. Kingi was fined £2 ami ordered 1.0 pay complainant's medica! expenses, £2 2s. Liquor Charges. Tari Puutu was charged with being found drunk in a public place., Constable O. Rice stated that he had seen defendant on the occasion re- 1 ferred to in li:e charge, and he had had a bottle of beer in his jersey. The only explanation he would give was that he had found the beer at the back of the hotel. Puutu was ordered to pay 19s costs and on the second count of aiding and abetting in the procuring of liquor was fined 10s with costs los Jimmy Hiraka was ordered to pay costs. £1 Is, on a charge of beirijg found drunk in a public place.
