FORTHCOMING CENTENNIAL

The local Centennial Committee meets tomorrow evening for the first time in the New Year. There will be considerable matter for discussion and plenty of food for thought. Members will be interested in the new proposal for the Maori part in the celebrations which will require approval and endorsement. In this connection as has already appeared in the BEACON, a small sub-committee has been created for the purpose of organising* the Native section of the programme which makes for a whole day's festivities, instead of the single afternoon's proceedings as previously planned.

Test for Drivers. Another interesting revision in the traffic regulations is that a person over the age of 70 will be required to undergo a driving test annually and will also be required to furnish a medical certificate. News from the Achilles. News from the Achilles has been received by the families of the Rotorua members of the crew. No indication was given of the whereabouts of the ship, and replies were sent through the Admiralty in London. Appreciation was expressed generally of the generous action of the cable company in granting facilities for free cables and replies.

Big Sheep Movements, Arrangements are ebing made for tlie commencement of the main movement of sheep from the Gisborne and Coast districts to the Wai kato, and by the end of the week some big mobs arc to be on the road. The Gisborne sheep are expected to follow both the Motu and the Waioeka routes, but no doubt the earlier mobs will take the former in order to avoid the traffic. There is an abundance of feed on the roadsides at present, and the earlier mobs, at least, should reach the railhead in good condition. The number going north should be up to last year's or perhaps larger, for agents report that substantial forward sales have been made.
