MAIZE STOCKS
ALMOST EXHAUSTED IN
GISBORNE
Nearly all of the past season's maize stocks in the Gisborne district have been shipped to other centres, while practically all of the remainder in cribs has been sold for forward delivery, leaving only sufficient for local requirements. Forward business was on the basis of the minimum price at the time of shipment, the rate being 5s Sd this month and as fkl in December.
It was stated at Gisborne on Monday that the only remaining maize held in the district awaiting shipment was in a few of the large cribs The remainder of the season's demand would be filled with South African maize, orders for which were mentioned recently.
Most of the new seasons' crop lias been sown, and much of it already is showing above the ground Lo a good start, being assisted by the showers last week. No reliable estimate of the area planted this season is available yet, but a considerable
increase is evident
Last season's crop was estimated at about 2000 acres, and, while a month or so ago it was believed that the area this season would reach 3000 acres, it is thought now that this was an under-estimate and that the total will exceed 3000 acres.
