REVIEW
PROMISING LOCAL WRITER 'FALLING LEAVES'" by Marion M. S. Curran. It is with no small degree of pleasure that we review this neat little volume of verse by a promising youns: Whakatane composer. Miss Curran whose poetry is mainly of the free-verse variety, has a style which is both forceful and refreshing. The fact that many of her themes are locally inspired should give the book an added interest to Whakatane readers. We; like the easy flowing rhythm, and balance which attends all her best efforts, and also her ready command of English and subtle expression. She is particularly at home in Nature and phantasy in which her powers of description are rich in sentiment and language. We have in mind such compositions as "Moun tain Trees' (skilfully and beautifully constructed) 'Pereginations of a Gipsy Mind' and 'The Gipsy Pedlar!'
There is deeper insight and knowledge of life in 'Sunlight of Yesterday,' and 'Sit Tibi Terra Levis' both of which reveal the true art of the gift known as poetry,, while ws glimpse the cynic, in such lines as 'Revulsion' and 'Three Generations' The book is an achievement and for one with the better part of her life before her shows much promise. Our congratulalins to Miss Curran whom we trust will receive all the encouragement she deserves. 'Falling Leaves' is obtainable at all local booksellers.
