N.Z. PIG MEAT

FUTURE BRITISH PURCHASES

MR W .A. PHILLIPS OPINION When asked lo comment oil the outcome of the Imperial Go\emment's purchase of our exportable surplus of frozen pig meat, Mr W. A. Phillips, Chairman of Directors of the New Zealand Co-operative Pig Marketing Association, Ltd., stat ed that viewed in the light of recent rises in overseas freight and insurance amounting to more than a halfpenny a lb., the f.o.b. price must be

regarded as very satisfactory. Under existing handling conditions and buy ing practice,, the on hooks New Zealand equivalent -would enable a considerably higher payment to the farmer than the average ruling last year. It would appear from Mr Nash's statement that an undertaking had been given .the Imperial Government that the grading of all meat would, during the period of the contract, Ik; kept under strict control. Tt could therefore be assumed that it is the intention to continue the recognised trade practice of paying differentials for quality within specified weight ranges. Such a course would be highly desirable if the prestige now enjoyed for our product on the English market is to be maintained for the return of normal trading con

ditions

Although the Imperial Government have now acceded to our request to take some porker aa eights, the purchase of these has been limited to only 25 per cent of our total exports of weights over lOOlbs. The special consideration shown on this important aspect of the position will be greatly appreciated by producers, who will require the utmost assistance possible to carry 75 per cent of their production into deadweights of over lOOlbs. Pending agreement on detail procedure Avith the Government a revised schedule of hooks prices to conform with the new order cannot be determined,, but these, it is assured will be sufficiently attractive to ensure n continued keen interest in

production
