N.Z. MAORI CONTINGENT
REGISTRATION PERIOD EXTENDED The following telegrani has been received from Sir Apirana Ngata, by Mr J. Riini of Paroa, who is acting as recruiting officer for this district: "Registration has been extended till 31st instant. Maoris without children, or with one child may be registered. Shearers will not be sent to camp till after Christmas but may register now."
Mr Riini states that to date there have been 24 enlistments from his district. A trip to TeTeko this week where he had been told to expect about 40 recruits resulted only " in, about a dozen signing up, of this number there were only two actual Te Teko Maoris. He has 'put down the poor response to the fact that the decision to form a Maori Battalion is not as widely known as it might be. By the end of the month there was every probability of the full quota being .realised.
