PROMOTIONS FOR SOME
ENJOYING THE WAR
Whakatane men in the special force who have gained promotion include Lance Preston, now a sergeant, Jack Stewart, a corporal, and Bill Sargent, also a corporal. Lance Preston as a corporal was among a number of N.C.O's selected to proceed to Trentham for training for commission, but it was decided to reduce the number to be sent and Lance, holding the lowest rank, was the unlucky man. However, he gained dnother stripe as a consolation prize, and he s::vs he is just as pleased because he wants to be sine ol getting away with the first ex pec: itionarv force.
From reports all the Whakatane men are enjoying camp life ami mak ing their presence felt in tneir various ways. Chief "grouse" seems to be t the quality of the food which, in spite of the praise given by city papers, is described as often very poor. However, it is early in the Avar and no doubt the standard is improving all the time.
Whakatane people saw Jack Stewart in Auckland over the week-end. Fay Waugh, well-known stock agent, formerly of "Whakatane and lateiy of Te Puke, who has also enlisted, was with him, and it is reported that they fought the battle of Auckland in tenacious fashion, one of the high spots being their meeting wilh Alf Hayter in a city rendezvous.
