STRICTER CONTROL LIKELY WHAKATANE BOROUGH ACTION . .-if Agreement that a by-law Svas nece.ssjary 'to provide for the liccnsirij* oj all foodsellers' premises was expressed by the Whakatane Borough Council, when it had before it at Monday night's meeting the report of the meeting of the finance committee which, inter alia,, stated that Inspector P .A. Wallwork had discussed this question with them. He had stated that, until the council passed the necessary by-law. the relevant regulations under the Health Act were not effective in the borough, and could not be applied Viim :>ml no authority existed
by nun, anu 110 to enable him to require compliance with the regulations. Thus a condition of affairs could exist which was highly undesirable from the point of view of public health. The committee recommended that the bylaw be passed. The Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, said that the matter had been before them on numerous occasions, but the inspector had thrown quite a new light on the .subject. At present he could only g9 into a shop and take samples of the foodstuffs, and prosecute if they were not up • to standard. He had no power to see whether the utensils Avere clean, the washing-up facilities were adequate, or whether the premises . themselves • required bringing up to standard. t The Mayor thought it was now quite desirable that the by-law 5 should be put into force. 1 It would put all foodsellers on the " same footing, said Cr W. Sullivan. Mr Barry said that the inspector had assured them that he Would not bring in any drastic changes, such as forcing a man to rebuild his shop "That's unfortunate. We might need that sort of thing before long in the building trade" said Cr Sullivan with a laugh,
